Three questions: What should be mandated? (That's our business). What should be the guidelines? (That's also our business, it affects possibilities). What do individuals feel comfortable with after a pandemic year and varying circumstances? (THIS ISN'T OTHER PEOPLE'S BUSINESS).

I've written both for the Atlantic and the BMJ arguing for removing outdoor mask mandates. But that's not the same as saying nobody should or could choose to wear one, or we should be judging them. People may be immunocompromised. Or just not comfortable. Or whatever. Let it go.pic.twitter.com/JAmeNVa0jD

This is why I support simple and credible mandates and guidelines plus information to let people judge *and* a norm that a transition will be slow, and there are sociological processes that govern mandates/rules as well as individual ones for practice: https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2021/04/cdc-outdoor-mask-pandemic/618739/ …pic.twitter.com/Go8xCsMoHa

I think it's worse than that, honestly. Not one of these articles acknowledges the immune compromised. We're simply expected to lock up forever, I guess, so Americans can play.

Yeah, it's terrible. I'm sorry. I wrote about this, last time. Having a sensible rule and an explanation can help, because even if there doesn't need to be a mandate for outdoors, they should explain circumstances vary.pic.twitter.com/E5QVDcrajc

There's an anology here (again) with gay men adjusting to the new reality of PReP as it applies to HIV transmission. You didn't just forget the fear the moment the science on PReP was clear.

Yes! I'm vaccinated in a country with 35 daily Covid cases and 0.1% test positivity. I'm still wearing a mask in the lift, avoiding overly-crowded indoor spaces. I know it's not rational but it isn't hurting anyone.
-
This is the best case for COVID zero I've seen. People are very slow to adapt to new risk levels. What makes it "overly-crowded"? Quite sure you're missing out on something with this level of caution. It may be worth it to you but it isn't costless.

We should hold our horses until we know what this Indian variant is going to do to the vaccinated. The unvaccinated are on their own, sadly. I fear the fat lady hasn't started to warm up yet.

Yes, always lots of “the vaccine protects you, but you can still transmit it!” Which...is technically true. But doesn’t speak to how very unlikely that is. It gives the impression that those who are vaccinated are likely to wander around infecting a ton of people without knowing.
