Can someone explain to me what is happening with B.1.351. It essentially ripped through South Africa then regressed with a stable case incidence. Add to that on nextstrain - it seems to be stable at 8-9% globally. Is this a fitness thing or something else?pic.twitter.com/C4HMrw84y8

It can't be just vaccination as there's many nations using AZ which may have more breakthrough - clearly has established in many naiive settings? So then what? Less receptor bindings? Outcompeted by B117? @angie_rasmussen @zeynep @KrutikaKuppalli @KindrachukJason @sci_questions

I’ve been asking the same question as well. Why? The initial report suggested enhanced transmission so it could have been assumed good binding to ACE2 (though haven’t seen much since). Is it just limited introductions elsewhere as well as a B.1.1.7 (1/2)

fitness advantage in the regions it is introduced in so B.1.351 simply can’t outcompete? (2/2)

I am guessing that. B117 seems to be incredibly fit in the mix, and maybe this is it. B1351 has definitely been introduced into vulnerable areas, but doesn't seem to be representing. There were some breakthroughs in israel in fully vaxed. But didn't seem to stay in population

Been wondering too. Have some speculations but not yet seen any way to try to test them.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1378735644466380805 …

So not all variants are “drawing things out.” Quite the contrary. On partial immune escape, just amazing how everyone is ignoring what *actually* happened in South Africa without widespread vaccination. It’s like the most important data doesn’t count. Baffling.

Not sure I believe the Israel cases mean much though. Eight cases. Not clear if independent. Will wait for paper. https://www.theinsight.org/p/always-read-the-methods-section …pic.twitter.com/AqC5X6eA2R
