I suspect these will change but even without vaccination, outdoor spread was rarer and confined to prolonged, close contact (under one's control) and people can get vaccinated and/or wear a mask themselves. Mandates make sense when risk is high and individual protections limited.https://twitter.com/AlecMacGillis/status/1389017564421009410 …

Clearer on the news. The key for me is that I’m still seeing all sorts of outdoor stuff being banned and *curfews* around the world. (DC just banned *standing* along with dancing in outdoor weddings if I am reading their order correctly).https://twitter.com/mdaniels5757/status/1389230002043072516 …

As things stand, I'm staring at "Outdoors is fine! Except a little bit in large crowds or sustained exposure" and mentally cancelling the family reunion after the anti-vaxxer cousin killed his own father last weekend. And not buying MLB tix quiiiiiiite yet.

I'm sorry that people in your family have died. It's always heartbreaking, especially when it was preventable. And yeah, I'll go to the park happily outdoors, but not willing to pack into bleachers quite yet.

Totally with you on the mandates and glad to see, eg, MIT has finally changed its outdoor mask rules too. Then again I wore a KF94 walking to the cafe this morning because the pollen is so plentiful right now!

Went hiking in the Bay area and no one was unmasked. I hear you on individual choice but this is the least impactful CDC guidance I've ever seen and it is very hard to unmask when you are the only one. We have low transmission/high vaccination rates but no change re: outdoors.

No, but I fear this new guidance is not understood. The polarization around masks and the incredible shaming on all sides needs to be tackled. Those promoting the new CDC guidance are not being believed and called reckless.

It's time to redefine politeness. Given what we know now, the most polite thing to do is live and let live. I'm not going to scold or scowl at anyone who chooses to keep wearing a mask -- & I ask them to extend the same courtesy towards those who choose to stop.
