This sounds very similar to conversations about precautions with my teenager. She will argue on the side of precautions and criticize peers for not being cautious enough, and then argue for participation in an activity where caution is warranted. It’s a thing. It happens.

I'm curious about why taking the mask of helped you use the phone, was it so your glasses didn't steam up with the mask on, or something to do that the weird cognitive way we are wired makes it easier to concentrate without one on?
