A good step, that could go further. I have a forthcoming piece on this with @mugecevik and @sdbaral (in BMJ) arguing for removing outdoor mask mandates (should be out tomorrow!). Also see below my quote to @PaulSaxMD earlier for his piece in the NEJM journal watch. https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1387078753336057863 …pic.twitter.com/5mdSyQaKel

(All three are excellent resources for media). Our piece is longer but for my part: I think people can be advised to wear masks outdoors for prolonged encounters at close distance, especially if unvaccinated and/or if talking/yelling but restrictive mandates are not necessary.

We watch our kid play baseball. No one wears masks, we did in the fall, but this sping, no.

Agree. One thing that drove me nuts watching sports — coaches wear masks, then pull down when yelling at players #backwards

Yes, a step forward but still somewhat vague as to possible contexts where a mask should still be worn. Common sense would dictate that going maskless outdoors is fine as long as a reasonable distance can be maintained in all contexts.

It's hard to generalize for every situation for everyone. Generally I'd want 2 of 4: vaccinated, masked, outdoors, guaranteed distance. The last is kinda hard unless nobody's around or spaced out chairs on the lawn, etc. I'd rather wear a mask when unsure if someone may approach.

So if you're vaccinated, but yelling, you should still wear a mask? You do realize you're setting up a future of permanent masking? Or at least there will be mask requirements for the foreseeable future. Whether people will continue to pay attention is another story.

We’re not going to have a future of “permanent masking,” get a grip

I'm looking forward to the piece! This phrasing makes it sound like you might think it still sensible to advise vaccinated people talking outdoors to wear masks. Some people will really take this advice to heart so if we give it, it should really be what's best for them.

I am confused by this at the bottom of the CDC graphic. Does that not seem to suggest that vaccinated people may still need to be masked for certain activites but not socially distant? Even indoors?pic.twitter.com/JRhiaHthDh

I am a professional wedding officiant. I talk loud for a living. I did this socially distanced/outside/limited contacts pre-vax, but lost income to competitors who took more risks. As a performer, I’m wary of soft advice that translates into permanent changes.
