Before this gets out of hand. "Distance doesn't matter" IS NOT what "it's airborne" or primarily aerosol-transmitted means or implies, and the headline is not reflecting correctly a modeling paper they are using says. I agree .. it is absurd to state it the way the headline does.

But I should qualify this by saying that while this paper does not prove the point, there are some studies that indicate the near-field might in fact be ~2 m (e.g. see Table 1 in https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.est.0c07721 …, Fig 9 in https://arxiv.org/abs/2104.01219 ). 1/2

Yeah having found myself reading a lot papers and working with awesome people in the field, the consensus seems to be distance is protective but not a magic bullet, and as that abstract says "this distance defining the near-field extent was also highly variable among scenarios."

@jljcolorado cigarette smoke analogy is best to describe the roll of distance indoors. The risk/smell will be highest the closer you are... but if you spend a lot of time in the room (e.g. classroom) and there is low ventilation there is risk/smell in most of the room.2 replies 4 retweets 9 likes -

One missing key in a lot of the indoor discussions is time. If the ill person is in the room for prolonged period of time, the room becomes more well mixed and the far field risk increases and distance becomes less important.

Exactly. The kind of thing you can explain—including what well-mixed means and the time component, rather than headlining "6 feet and 60 feet are the same". So irresponsible. Can't convince the editor though. She's saying they're just quoting the authors.https://twitter.com/Dawn_Kopecki/status/1385726948060585985 …

If i were given a choice of being 6 feet or 60 feet from an infected person indoors, I know what I would choose. Call me naive if you will...
