I once wrote a review of why Game of Thrones last season felt so hollow—it switched from sociological story telling to the (dominant Hollywood narrative) of psychological one. It seems both a lifetime ago but also.. still kinda relevant, now? Referred to in this tenth year piece. https://twitter.com/curaffairs/status/1384926364957040645 …pic.twitter.com/cPlJ7uuYSQ

Well, here's my piece about sociological versus psychological storytelling. Game of Thrones is the vehicle! Spoilers, of course. Essentially: “Unhappy is the land that needs a hero.” (Yeah, that's why I think it is relevant to our current moment as well). https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/the-real-reason-fans-hate-the-last-season-of-game-of-thrones/ …pic.twitter.com/IgxalhOpnS

This is fascinating. Do you think there are examples of shows that do both really well simultaneously? I’d argue breaking bad does, maybe?

Hmm. Does this critique still hold for you post- the final episode? I saw that, one absolute clunker of a speech aside, as a return to the sociological storytelling of the early seasons

In fact my hypothesis for why a lot of the backlash is that the show *didn’t* end with the return of the rightful queen/king

Great insight. I'm listening to War and Peace: Tolstoy is 100% onboard with the sociology and powerfully devoted to radical swings in the behavior and empathic responses of characters based on their lived environments. All of them are like Jaime, the clearest such type in GoT.

I didn’t see this when you first wrote it, I just thought B&W were just shitty writers. But now this seems exactly right to me, it’s the environment/situation that shaped the story it the first few seasons. Tyrion’s arch really is the best example of this.

I’m rewatching GoT now. Thanks for helping me sort through the reasons I detest that last season.

Wow. 1. This is brilliant. 2. I really miss the spring of 2019 when my biggest complaint in the world was the GOT finale.

A minor point, but are you sure you're remembering "Galileo" correctly? In my edition (Manheim/Willett), Andrea is crushed that Galileo recanted instead of resisting. He wanted Galileo to be a hero. Galileo recognizes his failure and spends the next few years secretly .... 1/2

finishing the Discorsi, finally becoming a hero by giving it to Andrea to smuggle out of Italy. Unhappy may be the lands that need heroes, but Brecht’s point is that we need all the heroes we can get. 2/2
