The situation in India is dire and all variants associated with a surge need attention. But this man is 88 years-old, diabetic, two prior heart surgeries, and still had only mild symptoms (mild fever was reported) and is hospitalized out of caution likely because he is former PM.https://twitter.com/GabrielScally/status/1384452978086596616 …

And potentially could happen to countries which managed to "escape" the problem with whatever NPI and hailed as a success but were simply luck.

I’d like to add, endemic infectious diseases outbreaks play a huge role in making COVID 19 outcome worse, due to weakened immune system. Mosquito borne with COVID is a deadly combination. Testing for these is deficient too, not to mention the public attitudes towards treatment.

India is the latest example where high-filtration masking will save lives while waiting for vaccinations. Simple, light-weight, easy to transport, and relatively inexpensive. See letter to Gov regarding US production capacity of high-filtration masks-https://www.ammaunited.org/post/letter-to-biden-the-united-states-has-the-manufacturing-capacity-to-provide-high-filtration-masks …

We haven’t even properly responded to the covid crises here in our own country, so it’s no wonder that we aren’t helping other countries.

Yes. One really simple thing is the testing capacity is clearly far short given positivity rates. Surely many millions of rapid tests could easily be provided even if we don't want to share vaccines?! (in fact UK forced AZ to supply it with 5m from India last month...!!)
-
Not that I don’t think we shouldn’t share more vaccines with India - because I absolutely do - but wasn’t it the case that 5m doses were actually kept from being exported to the UK?

Abandon patents; release excess vaccine supplies to 3rd world. India’s problem is ultimately our problem.
