'playing devil's advocate' for me is just a colloquial way of signaling that you're exploring a side of the argument that I don't presently support. 'To play devil's advocate, what if we're losing something by switching to remote work?'

True, but that's still different from saying it's always bad - and always is an argument from 'evil'. There's doubtless an argument to be made about many kinds of bad faith debating tactics. But that's not what the o.g. tweet was doing.

Or indeed an argument against 'debate'. It's conversations that are interesting, where all parties explore multiple perspectives.
