If you encourage the procedural, gamified and contrarianist version that "devil's advocate" often becomes, and don't pay attention to preparation, substance and framework (like these platforms), you don't get the critical thinking you want in the world but "let's make shit up."

Yeah. The point was on what it really takes to have deep, substantive critical thinking and challenge, and what devolves into games that don't. Again: I pay people way above industry rates out of my own pocket to take me down as substantively as they can.https://twitter.com/tomeclarke/status/1383395983984259076?s=20 …

Astonishing to me (not really) that there are people still replying—some with multiple tweets—who haven’t bothered to read the whole thread. “Explain yourself!” is a silly thing to ask someone who has already done that, in the very medium where they are asking.

I feel skeptical about the displacement. My sense is that the vast majority of participants have no way to engage but clever contrarianism or group think cheerleading. Filling space with the second is generally worse and in the extreme much, much worse.

Well there is a lot of that, but a lot of people feel, or are encouraged to feel, that the game they just engaged in is "critical thinking" or debate, rather than what you just said. So yeah, not displacing the same space, but maybe the "feel" for that desire.
