Disagree. It was an enjoyable dinner time activity that taught us how to discuss thoughts, ideas, and beliefs without attacking people. Society can no longer make that separation sadly.
-
That's exactly the problem: society cannot make that separation. So it's time to set "devil's advocate" arguments aside for a time until we all, first and foremost, learn to argue from substantive, sincere positions and value the roles of evidence and knowledge.

Every argument is a game, always. Some have high stakes, some have low, some have none. But if you don’t practice, you can’t win.

What you do not know is more important than what you are certain about. Absolutely certainty about an error leads to catastrophic results because one cannot perceive that they are mistaken. This is made all the worse because one cannot be talked out of their error.
-
This is how we got to the current “words are violence, and also, silence is violence” situation.

If true, the solution to this is surely just "do it better"

As opposed to...what? You think people use more pure truth seeking techniques arguing in favor of their deeply held beliefs?
-
I'd bet you my house that on average, the quality of argument used to support beliefs one doesn't actually hold (devils advocate style) is superior to the quality of argument used to support genuinely held beliefs It's essential human nature

That’s the job of the educator to teach students to argue w evidence that is substantive and strong. This is so basic. I can’t believe I am typing this right now.
