COVID-19 is a unique enough circumstance that *everybody* is just making educated guesses. But it surely seems relevant that hesitancy about the AZ vaccine greatly increased in EU countries that paused administration of it, but not in the UK which didn't. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-astrazeneca-confid/european-trust-in-astrazeneca-covid-19-vaccine-plunges-poll-shows-idUSKBN2BE009 …pic.twitter.com/9F4IVvTLKq

As one of my UK followers once told me - vaccination is practically a national religion. Extremely high confidence and uptake even before the AZ clot issue came up

Also, it's impossible to ignore the role of vaccine nationalism. The Brits love the Oxford vaccine at least in part because it's homegrown.

In addition, NHS is something pretty unique to them. The key issue here is that nobody, absolutely nobody, has a crystal ball, but people are also absolutely right to point out potential ramifications especially so one can try to figure out ways to do this better.

You study the public sphere and I lived in the UK for a number of years. Here's one thing that's important: many people have a close relationship with their GPs and so they can turn to them, cost free, for guidance on understanding why the NHS has made some regulatory move.

So, in the UK, thanks to the NHS, there is a built in system of trusted experts to whom people can turn to understand complex risk. In the US, we lack that completely. It is costly to reach out to MDs for guidance on how to understand risk. So, we turn to different communities.

The uniqueness of the NHS is a good point but also the independence of the MHRA and JCVI has been communicated well. Also no marketing-to-patients allowed, so we (UK) are less used to 'choosing' medicines.

I agree. Also the rollout of the vaccine in the UK coincided with the devastating December/January wave of infections.
