      zeynep tufekci Retweeted U.S. FDA

Given the dramatic and— let's be honest—irreversible consequences of the announcement of a J&J pause, why aren't we set up to have had ACIP already convene last night? I'm for investigating everything, even this rare (6 out of 7 million), but we should be set up for this by now.https://twitter.com/US_FDA/status/1381925615478132739 …

CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance. FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases.

zeynep tufekci Retweeted Flying Yogini is vaccinated

"Authorities can do no wrong" strikes again! I've a feeling that, given the historic nature of their job, these people—who have been hard-working, thoughtful and exemplary in the meetings—would have managed to step up to the occasion amidst a pandemic.https://twitter.com/FlyingYogini/status/1381952812272267265 …

FDA says the pause is due to "abundance of caution." I am very much for abundance of caution against tail risk, and a full investigation into rare events. I respect these are difficult decisions. But "caution" isn't the term for dramatic, forward-leaning and irreversible acts.

I appreciate the people saying "we should feel *more* confident because they're investigating", which is true—it works on me!—but the word "should" is doing a lot of work there. Meanwhile, let's check in on how this affects dynamics of human cognition, media and social media.

I don't know what the "rare adverse effects emergency response plan" had been, but I hope there was one, especially after AZ/Europe. These are difficult times, for sure, and it's a difficult job. And what's done is done. I hope it's all resolved quickly.https://twitter.com/mammuthus/status/1381956140142100483 …

Given that some sort of vaccine related complications were possible at some stage, it is surprising how ill prepared we seem to have been to manage and communicate responsibly around this. Why wasn't this forseen?

I see it's "people should stop commenting", "begging the editors to properly contextualize the news", "look how rare it is" day again. All good, except a problem called reality: that's just NOT how the 21st century public sphere works. I wouldn't mind if it did, but it doesn't.

The tragedy is that all this "stay in your lane "ironic dunking is good primarily only for... Twitter klout, which is exactly why it is a *negative* for our pandemic response. It's just contributing to the problem it can't solve. Walter Cronkite isn't going to save this, folks.pic.twitter.com/nB7maIvKNK

Not only is this true for many "stay in your lane" dunks ("the dunker" is not qualified, just dunking), the problem remains even when it *is* deserved and "the dunker" is qualified. The problem is.. the 21st century itself. Have to adapt, not wish it away. https://twitter.com/MClendaniel/status/1381984654270599169 …

Okay, I'm gonna go back to what I was writing but for now, conclusion: dynamics of the public sphere in the 21st century cannot be ignored, and cannot be solved merely with better communication, even if we can advocate at least for that part to happen. The response has to adapt.

It is our first pandemic on twitter? Guess we all are still learning? (just like some of the other public health failures during this pandemic, known errors are needlessly replicated. learning from other countries & communities doesn't seem to be our strongest suite as a species)

Thank you. I'm seeing many well-meaning appeals (that I don't disagree with) to better communication/framing etc. but better "sci-comm" cannot do the lift required for what we're facing.

Failure of political leadership to follow science and existing pandemic safety protocols will not be fixed by "better communication/better science". People want to blame shift to science to explain unacceptable failure of governments in Western democracies respect science 1/3

All modern developed countries had existing Pandemic Protocols/Playbook that was in place in 2020, which states that international flights be shut down immediately upon new outbreak of novel infectious disease. US intelligence knew by late December 2019 there was outbreak 2/3

The forest ain't letting you see the trees. Slow down. Observe and think a bit more before you write. Come down to earth. Be humble. Response speed won't change the nature of the unfortunate news.
