Vaccine hesitancy is biggest problem in US going forward. And I know we really, really, REALLY, want to believe the public will see this as "the system is working!" but the reality is they will see it as another caution flag on vaccines. Public health needs it's scicomm A-game

The key challenge isn't in the communication part, though. It's the speed and nature of the response. There is no communication strategy, no matter how A-game, that will get you out of giving up multiple days of the news cycle to "Paused!!!!" It's tough, for sure.

Yep - cat out of the bag. And next set of comms critical to limit multiple cycles of "paused". Already see good scientists out in force working to place the result in context. Hopefully will temper first reactions to headlines...although we've seen how that goes...

I'm for better communication, but we're putting an enormous amount of hope on something that realistically cannot do what we expect of it—21st century and all—rather than how to put ourselves in a position that the communication part can realistically help address the challenge.

Better comms is damage control at this point (crisis comms). To avoid similar as summer "kids transmit same as adults" that relied on poor study but took weeks to correct and small subset saw correction. Better comms now might limit # of cycles so poor 1st comms doesn't "stick"

Crisis comms by whom, though? First you have to recognize the nature of the crisis (that it's not something well-meaning communication, alone, can address). We know what happened with the example above, and with so many other examples. Alas, sigh.
