Given the dramatic and— let's be honest—irreversible consequences of the announcement of a J&J pause, why aren't we set up to have had ACIP already convene last night? I'm for investigating everything, even this rare (6 out of 7 million), but we should be set up for this by now.https://twitter.com/US_FDA/status/1381925615478132739 …

I see it's "people should stop commenting", "begging the editors to properly contextualize the news", "look how rare it is" day again. All good, except a problem called reality: that's just NOT how the 21st century public sphere works. I wouldn't mind if it did, but it doesn't.

The tragedy is that all this "stay in your lane "ironic dunking is good primarily only for... Twitter klout, which is exactly why it is a *negative* for our pandemic response. It's just contributing to the problem it can't solve. Walter Cronkite isn't going to save this, folks.pic.twitter.com/nB7maIvKNK

Not only is this true for many "stay in your lane" dunks ("the dunker" is not qualified, just dunking), the problem remains even when it *is* deserved and "the dunker" is qualified. The problem is.. the 21st century itself. Have to adapt, not wish it away. https://twitter.com/MClendaniel/status/1381984654270599169 …

Okay, I'm gonna go back to what I was writing but for now, conclusion: dynamics of the public sphere in the 21st century cannot be ignored, and cannot be solved merely with better communication, even if we can advocate at least for that part to happen. The response has to adapt.

Also since all reported effects were in a limited cohort (Female 18-43) shouldn’t that be part of the communication? If you aren’t in that cohort the concern is probably negligible. If you are the concern is greater than that 1 in a million headline.

It was in their statement, but not the Twitter post. It has been picked up by CNN and AP.

Hello, sorry to bother but
@loafingcactus wanted me to ask you if you happen to have data showing JnJ is not less effective than Pfizer or Moderna? Do you happen to have any data that shows equal efficacy between the two technologies? Thanks! Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Just did some back of the envelope math. There's gotta be something else going on that hasn't been reported, right?https://twitter.com/BStulberg/status/1381958399856873477?s=20 …

the medical community doesn't evaluate drug efficacy by comparing to acts of God

but we can't have it both ways: if you want honest open communication (like we *didn't* have about masks), you have to trust ppl with uncertainties & this is being honest about a new risk, no?
-
Sharing data is open communication. Recommending a pause in everyone is a dramatic overreaction that will cause an unquestionable net increase in deaths.
