Given the dramatic and— let's be honest—irreversible consequences of the announcement of a J&J pause, why aren't we set up to have had ACIP already convene last night? I'm for investigating everything, even this rare (6 out of 7 million), but we should be set up for this by now.https://twitter.com/US_FDA/status/1381925615478132739 …

I appreciate the people saying "we should feel *more* confident because they're investigating", which is true—it works on me!—but the word "should" is doing a lot of work there. Meanwhile, let's check in on how this affects dynamics of human cognition, media and social media.

I don't know what the "rare adverse effects emergency response plan" had been, but I hope there was one, especially after AZ/Europe. These are difficult times, for sure, and it's a difficult job. And what's done is done. I hope it's all resolved quickly.https://twitter.com/mammuthus/status/1381956140142100483 …

I see it's "people should stop commenting", "begging the editors to properly contextualize the news", "look how rare it is" day again. All good, except a problem called reality: that's just NOT how the 21st century public sphere works. I wouldn't mind if it did, but it doesn't.

The tragedy is that all this "stay in your lane "ironic dunking is good primarily only for... Twitter klout, which is exactly why it is a *negative* for our pandemic response. It's just contributing to the problem it can't solve. Walter Cronkite isn't going to save this, folks.pic.twitter.com/nB7maIvKNK

Not only is this true for many "stay in your lane" dunks ("the dunker" is not qualified, just dunking), the problem remains even when it *is* deserved and "the dunker" is qualified. The problem is.. the 21st century itself. Have to adapt, not wish it away. https://twitter.com/MClendaniel/status/1381984654270599169 …

Okay, I'm gonna go back to what I was writing but for now, conclusion: dynamics of the public sphere in the 21st century cannot be ignored, and cannot be solved merely with better communication, even if we can advocate at least for that part to happen. The response has to adapt.

Unless there is more information that is not publicly available, you have a higher chance of getting struck by lightening than developing a blood clot after receiving the J&J vaccine. https://www.weather.gov/safety/lightning-odds …

I don’t think this comparison is any good. In Europe it turned out that the risk of death in the age group from 20-30 was higher from the astrazeneca-vaccine than the risk of death from a covid. A more differentiated view of risk seems to be necessary, also for J&J

This move by the fda is completely irresponsible and will lead to more fear and deaths than anything else. 6 cases? Are they nuts?

Especially after watching the exact same thing play out in Europe and all of the effort to avoid people getting too cocky about being vaccinated while the rollout continues... the toothpaste just doesn't all go back in the tube.
