If anyone is going to write about the latest Israel/variant study, I suggest noting: this informative thread by one of the co-authors; that it's actually excellent news; and that vaccine resistance is NOT analogous to antibiotic resistance (which seems to be a common conflation).https://twitter.com/SternLab/status/1380922920734711811 …

Here's a better headline, adding that the findings about vaccine breakthroughs (which we already knew would happen (duh!) about and should track by sequencing) are turning out to be really encouraging so far.https://twitter.com/notdred/status/1381297853855891462 …

What on earth? Again, we should keep an eye on variants especially in those (yeay, rare!) vaccine breakthrough cases (which are known from the trials) but THAT STUDY WAS EXCELLENT NEWS OVERALL ON THAT ASPECT. These headlines are wildly misleading. h/t

Some of the blame goes to the authors of the study given that they themselves used an alarmist title despite what are overall encouraging results.

Reuters? A respectable organization? Not any more:https://www.reuters.com/article/rpb-tass-connect-idUSKBN2381UQ …

I’ve noticed that they’ve become more alarmist and tabloid like in the last months. This helps explain why.
@Reuters is no longer a source I trust with your thinking twice and doing separate research. Disappointing.

I know its a scientist talking science to colleagues but her point (5) was kinda hard to parse. Esp considering general public/media is already twitchy.https://twitter.com/sternlab/status/1380922931828641793?s=21 …

I read this earlier and came to very much the same conclusion. This is what happens when journalists/editors report on science without any science background themselves.

'The Hill' literally just tweeted this same crap out.

A co-author is on Twitter explaining it it, folks! Come on. FWIW, the study itself made me feel *better* about both the mRNA vaccines and the threat of B.1.351 (which we should track).
