For @insight, I wrote about the gaslighting of some basic facts about this pathogen that were evident by February of 2020: presymptomatic infectiousness, clusters and airborne transmission. (Other country’s scientists noted these and acted accordingly.) https://zeynep.substack.com/p/the-gaslighting-of-science …pic.twitter.com/g7p2glfIg9

We need an NTSB style (no-blame) investigation into what went wrong and why most Western nations’ scientific apparatus/authorities largely missed acting on some key basics that many other countries quickly realized because the evidence was so strong. Something went deeply wrong.

No doubt mistakes were made up and down the chain of command. But ultimately the fact that the commander in chief did not want action was is the explanation for our failure. Unprecedented crises by definition require strong leadership. Ours was on the side of the virus.

He had a major role, for sure, but that’s just not true that was all. How do you explain Western Europe and what happened at WHO and what didn’t happen here (with all our universities and independent experts?) That’s a story we’re telling ourselves.

Yep. Much of this actually had little to do with Trump. It's about dogmas. Particularly with droplets v. aerosols. Dogma that when you looked closely had been proven false for years, but such a strong dogma that people in the field seemed totally unaware. Very powerful dogma.

Imagine if Trump had taken an international leadership role and unleashed the best minds. A 12 week lock down last March, combined with the defense production act to develop test trace isolate at the scale that was needed, combined with financial support for all.

His team would have seen what was working in the eastern countries, we would have worn masks much earlier. We could’ve been Australia. Instead the reactionaries had their way here and in Europe and economic activity was prioritized.

It isn't only America. And it certainly isn't a partisan problem, that will get us nowhere. In Canada there are jurisdictions that are nearly as bad at handling the crisis as anything in the US. It has to do with the how governments have all turned from depending on science.

CDC confusion was a direct consequence of him being in office. I live 2mi from the CDC, know folks, have worked in big gov't departments. When CDC gets confused, it ripples out to US experts. (This also wasn't a hot research area.) Cold research area also explains a lot of others

When you rely on specialized experts to deal with unusual or rare problems, it's critical that they be able to function flawlessly and quickly. See also Capitol Police. Both orgs were out of shape.
