For @insight, I wrote about the gaslighting of some basic facts about this pathogen that were evident by February of 2020: presymptomatic infectiousness, clusters and airborne transmission. (Other country’s scientists noted these and acted accordingly.) https://zeynep.substack.com/p/the-gaslighting-of-science …pic.twitter.com/g7p2glfIg9

We need an NTSB style (no-blame) investigation into what went wrong and why most Western nations’ scientific apparatus/authorities largely missed acting on some key basics that many other countries quickly realized because the evidence was so strong. Something went deeply wrong.

On how things are *now* I'd recommend the whole debate referenced below, between scientists and the chair of the WHO Infection Prevention and Control working group. (When asked about N95 for healthcare workers, he said "acne" as his top objection. Really.)https://twitter.com/jljcolorado/status/1380641336316067841 …

These are the arguments against using N95s for COVID-19 from one of the top people in @WHO's infection prevention and control committee. Compared to the pro of preventing a deadly disease. I am speechless... https://twitter.com/DRTomlinsonEP/status/1380614939648344071 …

It took western authorities centuries to accept that slavery was wrong. Assuming responsibility is not very established in western culture after teenage years. I think they knew that they were wrong but admitting it publicly still requires a cultural shift.

No doubt mistakes were made up and down the chain of command. But ultimately the fact that the commander in chief did not want action was is the explanation for our failure. Unprecedented crises by definition require strong leadership. Ours was on the side of the virus.

How does this explain doctors and scientists getting so much wrong? Are you trying to say that Trump being more encouraging of them would have led to better answers? Like, dang, we could have observed airborne sooner, but Trump...

Indeed - here in Canada the same mistakes were made, so definitely not just a US problem. I don’t think our federal system helped as it allowed a confusión if accountability, but certainly the experts fell well short
