When I wrote this article about the looming threat of B.1.1.7—on New Year's Eve of 2020—it wasn't yet established as more lethal, but just more transmissible—bad enough. It appears *also* to be more lethal. Today, the CDC said it is now the dominant strain in the United States.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1344711352947011584 …

Heard about the new variant? That it appears to be much more transmissible but not more lethal? That's true but no relief. Transmissibility is an *exponential* risk and thus a huge threat. We need aggressive public health action now—especially vaccination. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2020/12/virus-mutation-catastrophe/617531/ … pic.twitter.com/I13Y9zlMJX

It's been just three months, and we're facing regional surges with increasing hospitalizations and deaths already, despite the biggest successful vaccination program in the world. That's how exponential threats work. By the time we get it together, the challenge is much harder.

Yes, yes and yes. Although some of the vaccines have maybe taken a bit of a hit against their ability to prevent symptomatic disease (but not necessarily severe disease), all of them appear to work very well against this one & probably against others, too.https://twitter.com/taterTATi__/status/1379976681277034503 …

So, we will be (mostly) fine in the United States, but if we can vaccinate faster, especially where the outbreaks are surging, we can minimize the suffering. But there are so many countries around the world facing terrible outbreaks, and not enough vaccines to go around.

I'm really worried about the rest of the world, many facing surges with more transmissibility, without vaccines, population tired, economies challenged... That's how things head also into unchecked exponential growth and hospital collapse. Like Brazil. We need to act, globally.

Wait...where are deaths increasing? Even in MI, the increase has been nominal so far.

Yet 3 states MI/NJ/NY make up 50% of current cases ...those states *also* are relatively much more restrictive than say TX/FL (and hospitalizations continue to drop in TX) How is that circle squared?

It never ends...”get it together”...the most cases in the US right now is Michigan...2nd most in NY...both places that followed the plans..there are no realistic plans to get it together

I was in favor of the mitigation tactics but I think a post mortem on this is going to indicate that you either have to go all out (Asia, Australia, etc.) or you just wind up causing a lot of suffering without much to show in terms of lives saved. The numbers just don't lie
