Yeah. I constantly hear people invoke "immune evasion" (almost always a partial indication from studies that do not pertain to the whole immune system) as if it means vaccines becoming useless against variants. No! Anyway, let's vaccinate the world, ASAP.https://twitter.com/ricksterps/status/1379078510350860289 …

I wish we weren't allergic to good news involving covid. A lot of really positive data coming out recently. If I just read headlines I would believe the vaccines won't protect me from all the variants and they are only good for like 6 months. https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1379064102824316929 …

Let's put this here, but keep in mind: tens of millions in the US remain unvaccinated and are *just as much at risk* if infected (if not more, as some variants may also be more deadly). Vaccines are amazing, but the work is to vaccinate everyone, globally.https://twitter.com/NateSilver538/status/1379090275969216519 …

Flabbergasted at how much speculative worrying there is out there against current/future variants making our vaccines completely “ineffective” (I’ll easily take a bet against that) when the real issue is we have AMAZING vaccines that DO work, but not enough of them for the world!

I've done LOTS of work on Direct-Acting Antimicrobial & Antiviral drugs (including helping put five drugs on the market), for which the evolution of resistance is a huge issue. Many people mistakenly think vaccines pose a similar risk, which they do NOT.

Direct-acting drugs impose a NEW selection pressure on bugs that natural immunity does not. Vaccines evoke the SAME immune mechanism as does natural infection. For SOME diseases, natural infection creates stronger immunity; COVID vax make stronger immunity than the virus does.

Vaccines are MORE effective against the new viral variants than is having had the disease, so they should SLOW DOWN evolution of resistance. We need to vaccinate the entire planet ASAP.

AND, even if we do need to make updated booster vaccines to cover new variants, strain-chasing with vaccines is MUCH easier than making new Antibiotics and Antiviral drugs.

We routinely make new Influenza shots every year. We can do that with COVID-19 even faster using the new mRNA platforms.

With or without vaccines, the most likely future for COVID-19 is another type of common cold virus; the difference is vaccines will get us there with far fewer deaths.

You're welcome! Friends and relatives ask me about this ALL THE TIME because I'm the only Virologist most of them know. I sometimes point them at your articles. And I have told MANY friends, "if your kids' school can't tell you the CO2 PPM in the classroom, YELL AT THEM!"

Minnesota's official guidelines for schools mention keeping CO2 below 800 PPM. Don't know of any other State saying that. Also don't know if MN is enforcing use of CO2 meters. https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/schools/vent.html …
