This is sadly true. My number one advice to all writers: do try to negotiate for, at a minimum, veto over headline/title if not a cooperative process. Journalist unions should make this an issue, as well. Many people only see the headline, and a bad headline can be catastrophic.https://twitter.com/06JAnk/status/1379425165323464707 …

Whatever point that practice may have had in the past seems entirely gone in an age of direct links to articles.

The first time I was informed of this, it was an explanation. At this point, it feels more an excuse.

@lawfareblog may be a small outfit, but they make sure we see what the headline is going to be/suggest improvements. The notion of writers not getting to do the headline is just WTFery.

I use one of your articles from The Atlantic for a research assignment for my students, and I remember the original title was “Do Protests Even Work?” and was changed to “Why Protests Work.”

As a pro at newspapers for 40 years I can tell you that the catastrophically bad headline is rare. In the internet age, it's less excusable because there are no space constraints on heds.

I see it everyday, so I don't think it's rare--I define it as the headline profoundly or moderately misrepresents to the story to the point that the actual point of the writing is gravely undermined.

As a reporter I used to get emails all the time complaining about the ads that ran next to my articles. I’m like “I don’t even get to write the headline, I don’t even know the name of the person who decides where the ads go.”

Sometimes the article, especially facts buried deep in the article, directly contradicts the headline. It's discouraging, particularly when the headline bends toward a political persuasion. And it happens both left and right.
