Although I’m a little worried that partial immune escape and higher transmissibility are being conflated here. The latter will speed things up (rather than prolong it, as the headline implies) and bring the next phase around *sooner* but tragically so—more infections.

I know you’re sold on them only emerging from immunocompromised people, Zeynep, but there are many evolutionary biologists and virologists who have told me otherwise. There is no evidence that all the E484K variants came from IC people, for eg

Never ever said “only”! I said clearly that’s *another* potential mechanism. I can’t argue this as there are papers but I’m just correcting the wrong claim about what I said.
