That's my take. I see zero evidence of it - as opposed to some people saying, wow, I really prefer working from home, etc. I think there's a lot of people wanting to think that there are some other weird people keeping them locked down, as opposed to covid locking them down.

Maybe. I'm so traumatized by this year that I get upset, maybe irrationally so, by suggestions that any of it is permanent. And I follow all public health guidance on masks but probably hate them as much as the most egregious anti-maskers so I hope they don't become a norm.

I mean, I've found the last year a downer too? And I get what you're saying. It is traumatic. It is horrible. Wish it'd never happened and wish it would end. All of it. But I do sense that some people have found a need to conjure these people up because it's hard to be mad ...

I think this is right but also kind of who cares? Putting "mask up" in your twitter handle has become a tribal thing for a lot of people. And some have become bonded with them before they are an assurance of safety. The latter point is understandable. But I truly ...

I do think this is what motivates these feelings. But I really think it makes sense to move out of catastrophic levels of public health crisis (even now close to a thousand dying a day) before we assume that people really want this, as opposed to reacting to a very real pandemic

I'm double-vaxxed, so I have 90% immunity. But masks give 100% immunity. It took me a long time to accept the safety of mask-wearing, and it will take me a long time to trust the vaccine.

Wow. You're completely wrong, and I say this as an early advocate of mask-wearing and essentially put my whole public writing career on the line to advocate for it. I will take vaccination any day under any circumstances over any amount of masking short of Ebola ward standards.

Trust doesn't come overnight. If it did, I would gladly give up wearing masks.
