Delayed 2nd dose was a good idea-squashed too quickly. Historic crisis demanded less rigidity. Just latest example. Imagine another 50M with 1-dose right now... Grateful to those who floated this early: @VirusesImmunity @zeynep @michaelmina_lab @ashishkjha @Bob_Wachter

After calling it anti-science for months, yes, that idea was poisoned. But slight delays in booster schedules are not uncommon, and doing it *with* an early trial (which is what we proposed) would have let us monitor & swiftly adjust if we got a negative signal (like an uptick).

Yes. Not altering the schedule even a bit was widely presented as "we are sticking to science" and UK was ridiculed for delaying doses (even though it was their scientific committee of pretty high-level experts who recommended it) etc.

Agree w Zeynep that the messaging got poisoned; this alternative strategy was presented as deviating from trials, despite many reasons why ok, and then message taken by public was this is not following best science.

I also think timing influenced this. In mid Dec when Zeynep/Mina piece came out (1st I know of), no variants of concern at that time and expectation of millions vaccinated in Dec/Jan (overpromised, of course). This influenced the “let’s just stay the course” position, IMO

Right, though my own reasoning was (and Mina can chime in) we'd get hit by seasonality and see a spike even without the variant issues, and thus decided to stick my neck out and call for a trial. (B.1.1.7 was already suspect by then, by the way). After Dec 20, even more urgent.

I agree with you - was the smart approach to get your idea out there there early. I just suspect that in mid-December many were thinking (incorrectly) that we were in the clear very soon, so why deviate, and that may have led some to dig-in against any change. Again, rigidity.
