Delayed 2nd dose was a good idea-squashed too quickly. Historic crisis demanded less rigidity. Just latest example.
Imagine another 50M with 1-dose right now...

Rajeev Venkayya MDVerified account @rvenkayyaThis is a really important point. I suspect many think a vaccine may not work after a delayed 2nd dose. In all likelihood, a delayed second dose would offer *better* protection. The question is the level of protection during the 1-2m delay. 1/ https://twitter.com/florian_krammer/status/1345810407898935296 …Show this thread2 replies 0 retweets 16 likesShow this thread -

Joseph Allen @j_g_allenMore adding support for delayed 2nd dose strategy.@mtosterholm +@mlipsitch are supportive. Early calls to consider this (notably op-ed by@michaelmina_lab +@zeynep in mid-Dec) were too quickly dismissed by some, IMO. It's a race against new variants. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/02/experts-tout-delaying-2nd-covid-vaccine-dose-us-deaths-mount …1 reply 0 retweets 9 likesShow this thread -

Joseph Allen @j_g_allenThis is a data-driven argument for giving single dose of vaccine as means to quicker herd immunity (coming back to 2nd dose later) Exact type of creative thinking we need to get us out of this pandemic more quickly.@michaelmina_lab and@zeynep https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/18/opinion/coronavirus-vaccine-doses.html …1 reply 1 retweet 11 likesShow this thread -
More on the costs of rigidity during a crisis.

This has been really interesting. It got too quickly cast as "not science" even though there were a substantive number of leading experts advocating for it. (I had proposed an immediate trial exactly hoping we'd avoid muddling through it as science/anti-science camps but alas).

We didn't even try the six week interval that CDC/WHO said was okay which would have put us maybe a month ahead of here? There will eventually be many papers, I guess, comparing the mortality/morbidity differences of alternative trajectories, especially in light of B.1.1.7.
