For example, there is research showing *content* of fast-food has also shifted—competing with each other—but also we eat more. There, at least, we can measure and see this. Imagine having no content data or sales data, looking at health metrics alone. Hard to reverse engineer.

I'd co-sign that application! Better data is needed for sure. We are genuinely surprised there isn't a significant relationship between user-driven / socially-driven algorithms & polarization, even as we measure it. (The thrust for this came from your NYT Op Ed - so thanks!

Thank you. I do suspect that part of the answer is the effects are hard to separate, and I do really appreciate all the work and creativity goes into papers like yours. My frustration is completely on why we, as a field, still don't have the resources for a national panel etc.
