Fuming. I supported a US trial of AstraZeneca so it could undo the *unnecessary* damage to vaccine confidence from their botched initial rollout. Yesterday, I was cautious because, again, press release, no data. Turns out AZ is botching this rollout, too.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1374060809144438785 …

Apparently efficacy w full data is 69-74%, so ~8% lower than claimed in press release based on interim data

Agree. It seems they put it all on the line just to get a slightly better number for the press release.

Good, I trust your hunches better than AstraZeneca's research anyway.

'Company prepares press release, is embargoed pending DSMB approval; approval arrives, press release is released'. Seems pretty natural to me, why the hyperbole? Surely more extraordinary for DSMB to release its statement muddying the waters?

Imagine the kind of questions that is going through the head of an average person like me right now (who can't really understand all these data about 'interim' and 'up-to-date') Why can't AZ make it easier for laymen?

It’s hard for me to imagine the DSMB issuing such a public rebuke unless they are truly concerned about something (I had assumed exaggerated efficacy). It’s really not what DSMBs do.

If you were to look at this from the point of view of AstraZeneca, what would you say? I am genuinely curious. It's hard to understand the thought process there. Is it cultural?
