Fuming. I supported a US trial of AstraZeneca so it could undo the *unnecessary* damage to vaccine confidence from their botched initial rollout. Yesterday, I was cautious because, again, press release, no data. Turns out AZ is botching this rollout, too.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1374060809144438785 …

I honestly do NOT think there's anything else wrong! The US Data and Safety Monitoring Board has the (more final) results, and it really doesn't look like there is anything wrong besides AZ's repeated errors in the public-facing handling of a good vaccine.https://twitter.com/pvancleaf/status/1374390973812252674 …

Do you not also feel that niaid could have not released a very worrying midnight statement about efficacy with no indication of what the issues were? Could this not have been done in private, it has been done for decades???

Well, the highly respected UK-based medical journal
@TheLancet chose to publish, and later retracted, the first article linking vaccines and autism. Toothpaste never returns to the tube. Rather sad, actually.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

This is exactly the kind of crisis that happened in India with the Bharat Biotech vaccine as well. Goverment went ahead and approved its use even before the third stage trial data was released, creating hullabaloo where none was required.

Example of establishing vaccine confidence via a tailored approach
Thanks @washingtonpost featuring#covid19#VaisakhiVaccinePopUpClinic - ‘if people don’t come to the vaccine, take the vaccine out to them’ reaching different faith & ethnic communitieshttps://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/sikh-leaders-celebrate-upcoming-holiday-with-vaccine-clinic/2021/03/21/812334d4-8a7b-11eb-a33e-da28941cb9ac_story.html …Thanks. Yes! So much science by press release. Created unnecessary fear/reduced vaccine uptake. Frustrating. So many amazing tools, so much bad PR. The vaccines would like to fire their publicists!

The question should not be only whether the AstraZeneca vaccine is effective. We should ask whether the resources used to produce it should instead be used to produce even more effective vaccines, such as apparently Pfizer and Moderna.

Comment: these AZN results are in a US where there are many more mutant strains than were present during Pfizer/Moderna trials. The best comparison wld be real world data from UK and, so far as I know, single jab Pfizer vs Oxford not too different. FWIW.

If it’s true that the difference in the data isn’t significant enough to change the basic message about the vaccine, was NIAID right to make this such a public disagreement? Not an excuse for AZ, of course.

You're both braver than I am. If I get to the vaccine clinic and see AZ is what's being offered, I'll wait.
