Fuming. I supported a US trial of AstraZeneca so it could undo the *unnecessary* damage to vaccine confidence from their botched initial rollout. Yesterday, I was cautious because, again, press release, no data. Turns out AZ is botching this rollout, too.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1374060809144438785 …

The level of irresponsibility on display here is unforgivable—especially since their vaccine seems fine! It's delivering in the real world, and the actual trial results are excellent! But they keep screwing around with confidence with their callous hubris.https://twitter.com/kakape/status/1374338061157421057 …

You know this is really what you call an unforced error, because the fact is, this is very likely a very good vaccine and this kind of thing does as you say do nothing, but really cast some doubt about the vaccines …"Show this thread9 replies 65 retweets 439 likesShow this thread -
The short of it is the AZ final trial results look fine, but for some unfathomable reason, they did a press release on *earlier* results instead of waiting 48 hours to release latest ones (which may have a few more negative events, but are still great).https://www.statnews.com/2021/03/23/astrazeneca-may-have-used-outdated-information-in-announcing-covid19-vaccine-results/ …

Yes, exactly this. There will likely be no accountability for a series of terrible and completely unavoidable actions. Next time we blame people for falling for misinformation, remember the role they played in contributing to this environment of mistrust. https://twitter.com/mathnegative/status/1374351913341231111 …

Can't describe how angry I think we should be at AstraZeneca right now. I hope for an investigation on the whole thing from start, including what if any role/involvement Oxford had on the botched side of things. The vaccine is fine! People in charge need to face accountability.

No. This is not acceptable. Their press release had NO indications this was outdated February results, or that final results may well have more negative incidents. It takes a lot to get the NIH to do this. Unprecedented:https://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/niaid-statement-astrazeneca-vaccine …

And the Pfizer results from back in November did exactly the same thing. 9 November ‘... in the first interim efficacy analysis’. Why is it ok for Pfizer to do that and not AZ?

Me? None whatsoever. I'm merely angry on behalf of billions of people for whom this is going to be the best available vaccine who did not deserve trials & rollout which included one unforced error after another, all of which were met with defensiveness rather than accountability.
