Fuming. I supported a US trial of AstraZeneca so it could undo the *unnecessary* damage to vaccine confidence from their botched initial rollout. Yesterday, I was cautious because, again, press release, no data. Turns out AZ is botching this rollout, too.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1374060809144438785 …

This is how I feel. If it were available to me/my loved ones, I would not hesitate. The AZ vaccine itself is already delivering excellent results. But vaccination requires building confidence, not just good vaccines, and process matters. See Europe, too.https://twitter.com/ashishkjha/status/1374351260191649794 …

I honestly do NOT think there's anything else wrong! The US Data and Safety Monitoring Board has the (more final) results, and it really doesn't look like there is anything wrong besides AZ's repeated errors in the public-facing handling of a good vaccine.https://twitter.com/pvancleaf/status/1374390973812252674 …

It is really questionable why UK govt blocked Oxford-Merck deal in favor of AZ.

I wonder if this is partly motivated by reputation management for hte British audience. Only the good AZ news (of which there is genuinely plenty, of course!) gets any real coverage here so the 48 hour advantage could leave the 79%/100% figures as the default perception here.

Just to illustrate the point...here's one of the generally better outlets today! https://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/astrazeneca-vaccine-covid-oxford-b1821072.html …pic.twitter.com/Kor7w5EeQ3

Do you think DSMB tried to resolve this privately with AZ and went public after AZ said they were going ahead with their release anyway? Obviously going public is a big deal and will undermine confidence even if AZ releases newer data confirming outdated results.
-
That's exactly what the WSJ reported this morning. They reported that NIAID brought their concerns about the data to AZ over the weekend, but for some reason AZ went ahead with their announcement yesterday, forcing NIAID to make a statement. An unforced and baffling error.

My thoughts exactly Ever since their contractual spats with EU, it feels like AZ management is acting as if they want to look fishy and only thing that kinda save them is that their vaccine is OK

That would be ideal. But isn't there a regulatory issues here? ie As a publicly listed company AZ has to release as soon as possible after it knows trial results - to avoid insider trading. Admittedly that 'something' doesn't have to be this.
-
If there was any stock manipulation concern, it would run, I'd hope, towards not releasing outdated results without noting they were outdated. Baffling.
