Yes, feels like cold-comfort now as we are and have been late, but we're here. The new CDC director has already cited importance of aerosols as one of things that most surprised her—along with a good chunk of people, clearly. But this will bring in good changes for future.

(The above is a tragedy. We shouldn’t have had to go through a whole year of a once-in—a-century pandemic like this. The history is well-documented and you can find all the guidelines and news conferences—and how many countries went their own way. Only upside: if we learn).

Three things were obviously key to target mitigations: this was like SARS in two key ways—airborne and overdispersed—and not like SARS is one important way—presymptomatic transmission. Some countries had all three by March 2020. This is going to be a striking history book. Sigh.

It was very bad of the WHO to say that if you keep 3 (or 6) feet distance you're fine w/o a mask. This advise cost many lives. But it is also bad to imply that those situations *are* safe if you *do* wear a mask. If a situation is unsafe w/o a mask, it's also unsafe w/ a mask.

The stupidity of this aerosol blindspot has always amazed me. Anyone who has been around a smoker knows how far the air they expel travels and how long it lingers after they breathe out their smoke. Why would the viruses we breathe out be that different?

We have looked back & laughed at the folly of waking to/from our restaurant during early March '20 lockdowns, all masked up...only to be inside unmasked with to-go customers (albeit over 6' apart...) but still!

Why hasn’t there seemed to be much uproar about WHO? Have they always been this inept? Repeatedly ignored widely-available studies on transmission routes and provided damaging guidance which cost lives in any country heeding that guidance as meaningful.

Because Trump correctly said they were wrong, and pulled the US out. American news media couldn't bear to admit Trump was right, so they just ignored WHOs ineptitude.

In the U.K. at the start of #Covid Boris Johnson not only said that the use of mask was not necessary, but that it maybe contra productive! That maybe why, a great number of people here refuse to wear them. It took the Gov a long time before recommending the 6 foot distanceThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better.
