Bad news. This is the fifth paper convincingly showing that the UK variant B.1.1.7 is associated with increased mortality as well as being more transmissible. Countries without rapid and sufficient vaccine coverage may experience a rough spring (worse for Southern hemisphere).https://twitter.com/_nickdavies/status/1371441682089132032 …

Our paper “Increased mortality in community-tested cases of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7” is in Nature today. We find that B.1.1.7, the UK coronavirus variant identified in late 2020, is associated with 55% higher COVID-19 mortality than other lineages. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-021-03426-1 … 1/16 pic.twitter.com/Jv9790BBYi

It looks like the US will escape this—just outrunning it though it may stall progress here and there—because of our rapid & widespread vaccination. UK, too, likely has the worst behind it due to vaccination. Have to vaccinate the world as fast as possible.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1371146614807613443 …

Folks, *look* at this chart. That red line that's fallen of a cliff starting around January 10 is 65+ folks hospitalized for COVID. Already, 62.8% of 65+ and 26.6% of *all adults in the US had at least one vaccine dose. (And hospitalization lags infection by about three weeks). pic.twitter.com/SaerMSaWtO

This one is not! Also, the others reported usually in sensationalist terms are, so far, linked only to lower *neutralizing antibodies* which is not the same as lower efficacy (though a bit is likely) especially against severe disease/hospitalization/death. https://twitter.com/AmWs_Part2/status/1371456630127214592 …

Our many vaccines all report impressive numbers against severe outcomes even with the variants, and dithering over what is at best an incomplete understanding of their differences when the alternative—non-vaccination—is obviously so much worse MAKES NO SENSE.

Unlike last March, where we faced many unknowns with limited tools, we have especially excellent tools in our arsenal with vaccines. Again, exponential threats are best addressed by early, decisive action—no matter the uncertainty—rather than waiting around for more information.

B.1.1.7 also makes it harder to keep schools open. Business as usual when facing a more transmissible variant didn’t work in the UK. Then it didn’t work in Denmark. And now it hasn’t worked in Norway.

Why do I predict COVID-19 will become a disease of children in 2021? In developed countries, the majority of adults should be vaccinated by the end of the year. But children probably won’t be, and so the virus will predominantly circulate in children and adolescents.

Yes! I'm living in the EU now and there is essentially no distribution of vaccines here even as new cases continue to rise. The EU seems to be drastically behind and needs some assistance.

It would be very useful if the US and UK would stop blocking exports. The way they've acted is basically genocide-by-trade-embargo. It would be even more useful if they would allow immediate generic manufacturing. Preferably as of last November.

I wrote about something that's been bugging me: the argument for vaccinating the world because of variants that would emerge *over there* posing a grave threat to us *over here*. I think that argument fails morally, practically and scientifically. https://zeynep.substack.com/p/ill-take-the-hippie-dippy-wishful … pic.twitter.com/BhBJKgm3Wy
