Even the text of the article cannot reach photo editors, I guess? “When the state did not close beaches, there was national outrage, though the decision seems obvious in retrospect, given how much safer people are outside.”https://twitter.com/MarketUrbanism/status/1370789791957139456 …

@zeynep You'll love this one – all seven photos in this article about Florida's coronavirus response are of windswept beaches https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/13/us/coronavirus-florida-booming.html …

As of Monday, they're opening many public spaces, including removing all restrictions on nursing homes, and Florida has massively screwed up vaccination distribution. Lotta ppl are going to die. My mom works in a nursing home. I might beat De Santis with a shoe if she gets sick.

It's more fun to take photos of beaches than the insides of malls, and they look better. Photos of war are similarly unrepresentative.

But isn't the issue that keeping beaches open means people flock to beaches from out of state, cram into hotels, and go to restaurants and bars nearby? Like when they stayed open for spring break last year. People don't camp out in the open air. It leads to indoor events.

People have been saying this for a year now but... If that’s the problem, that’s what we should talk about. It makes no sense to aggressively highlight and shame the safest part of an activity to “hint” (in one’s mind) at something completely different.
