This is @zeynep speaking to @benthompson last year. It is perhaps the most worrying thing about our current system. How can it be that dissent has been so squashed in the medical community? Has that changed at all?pic.twitter.com/updLidRIbq

Thank you. Though it's complicated. You also don't want the quackery and the snake-oil: ordinarily, it makes perfect sense to assume the CDC and the WHO are on top of the problem—that's the filtering mechanism. The question is: what's the mechanism when they need to be pushed?
I currently think major universities should have formed a consortium early on, maybe? Latest by when Nancy Messonnier got silenced? What we lived through was too haphazard and, well, suboptimal. (Though I'm proud of my own record and efforts, this was clearly not a healthy path).
I, for one, would really value your thoughts about what long-term structures we need to avoid this mess given that this pandemic was, in all likelihood, a soft calamity and the next one won’t be.
Thank you. I'm thinking very hard about it, will likely write longer. It's not an easy question because *of course* people should trust the CDC/WHO above any individual—let alone me, lol—but also *of course* they did fail in part, and should have worked better. Much better.
