This is @zeynep speaking to @benthompson last year. It is perhaps the most worrying thing about our current system. How can it be that dissent has been so squashed in the medical community? Has that changed at all?pic.twitter.com/updLidRIbq

I currently think major universities should have formed a consortium early on, maybe? Latest by when Nancy Messonnier got silenced? What we lived through was too haphazard and, well, suboptimal. (Though I'm proud of my own record and efforts, this was clearly not a healthy path).
I, for one, would really value your thoughts about what long-term structures we need to avoid this mess given that this pandemic was, in all likelihood, a soft calamity and the next one won’t be.
I think what worries me is that there is seemingly no “in the tent” way for dissent to be expressed. That would allow the public message to be managed. I was “burned” by the mask one (I took the initial guidance to heart). I don’t forget that.
Yeah. Hence the consortium etc. type ideas. The lone individual against the institution: too many rogue-CIA-agent-takes-down-the-system movies and everyone thinks they're Galileo. OTOH yeah, you do need that timely "wait, wait, wait, no, NO" moment and in-the-tent dissent.
Isn't it more that any messaging that got ahead of or broke with Trump's narrative would have consequences, both for the person and the pandemic response. See for example Nancy Messonier's early statement and the weeks thereafter.
