This right here is another thing that's so terribly wrong and callous with blaming the victims... "Why didn't they stay home?" Because many had to work so others could "just stay home" and sometimes those workers unwittingly brought it to their crowded, multi-generational home. https://twitter.com/Arrianna_Planey/status/1368643445888344066 …

It's not that personal responsibility had no role to play—that's never the case—but this is the reality in country after country. It jumps at you from all the stats. The victims are... victims. Blaming or hating "them" is easy but doesn't square with the reality of what happened.

No paid sick leave, insufficient protection for indoor working (ventilation/hi-fi masks), no rapid tests (or rapid- PCR for cluster-tracing), insufficient infection control in long-term care... SQUIRREL! It's the fault of people who wanted to party! Non-mask wearers (minority)!

Plus, we closed parks and beaches; shamed people for being outdoors; did not provide guidance on how to socialize safer—deep human need—and a year passed like that... Plus, let's repeat: most victims are people who had to work under unsafe conditions and the vulnerable elderly.

Thank you. I think people don’t get this. Lockdowns don’t protect those who make it easier for us to work from home. Data from Toronto reinforces this

Similar data from other places, too. Too many people with strong opinions on all this are the ones who can work from home... Really missing crucial pieces of the picture.

Root causes of nursing home outbreaks, where greatest burden of illness and death has been, continue to be ignored and are very instructive on this topic. Low wages and poor benefits harmed residents and staff. https://www.pnas.org/content/118/1/e2015455118 … https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/abs/10.1377/hlthaff.2020.00957 …

It's terrible! The amount of attention to a few mask-burners somewhere versus exactly this—half the US deaths are care-facility residents. Poorly-paid staff with little/no benefits from historically-marginalized communities... But look a party! Or people on a beach somewhere!
