This right here is another thing that's so terribly wrong and callous with blaming the victims... "Why didn't they stay home?" Because many had to work so others could "just stay home" and sometimes those workers unwittingly brought it to their crowded, multi-generational home. https://twitter.com/Arrianna_Planey/status/1368643445888344066 …

It's not that personal responsibility had no role to play—that's never the case—but this is the reality in country after country. It jumps at you from all the stats. The victims are... victims. Blaming or hating "them" is easy but doesn't square with the reality of what happened.

No paid sick leave, insufficient protection for indoor working (ventilation/hi-fi masks), no rapid tests (or rapid- PCR for cluster-tracing), insufficient infection control in long-term care... SQUIRREL! It's the fault of people who wanted to party! Non-mask wearers (minority)!

Plus, we closed parks and beaches; shamed people for being outdoors; did not provide guidance on how to socialize safer—deep human need—and a year passed like that... Plus, let's repeat: most victims are people who had to work under unsafe conditions and the vulnerable elderly.

Read this devastating investigation into the reality of the pandemic in Los Angeles. These are not problems that can be overcome by chanting "wear a mask" & "just stay home" or acting like the main problem is those who refuse because they're selfish. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/03/02/magazine/covid-la-county-hospitals-black-latino-residents.html …pic.twitter.com/FH0105cqfp

But only "islands" can do that, that's the secret sauce. (Yes, that's sarcasm).https://twitter.com/ajsta/status/1368672755609071616 …

Here in Melbourne, during our 2nd wave the government paid people a AUD450 (USD350) "Test Isolation payment" if they didn't have access to paid sick leave whilst waiting for results. Then if PCR was +ve (note PCR test free) extra money was available to help quarantine.

Important, tough read. We should have paused all rent and all mortgage payments, and provided more support so people wouldn’t have to work. Excluding undocumented from aid was huge mistake, we know better

Drawing attention to the subject of the NYT article can stand alone. Or perhaps in relationship to the minimum wage provision that was just voted down. The comparison of this tragedy with legitimate anger at people who don't comply w/health provisions, trivializes everything.

Read similar/identical article in the LA Times. Someone did an analysis and if we just "sent the vaccine" to places in Los Angeles with the highest infection and death rates it would autmatically target latinos, af-americans, essential workers and the 'underserved in general'.

But the opposite is happening of course! The wealthiest areas with the lower infection and death rates have the highest vaccine rates and poor/essential workers have the lowest.

The word we use here in Texas is Genocide. Targeted genocide at the #BIPOC population.

What if we chant "as we vaccinate as quickly as possible, the federal government needs to pay most people to stay home, while paying hazard pay for vaccinated essential workers"?
