Browsed for a moment at my own tweets from early March 2020 and ugh, it's terrible.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1235294145134067714 …

Yeah, interesting question. On the one hand, I do support moving away from place-of-origin names. Sometimes it's fine, but often it's not. On the other hand, after making note of a key difference—presymptomatic transmission—SARS/MERS lessons were crucial.https://twitter.com/MrCheeze_/status/1368650726457638912 …

In a parallel universe, we could’ve done a much better job of containment and put ourselves in a position to help other countries like Brazil, where an unimaginable tragedy is unfolding.

I guess it will be great if we learn from our mistakes and thus are better prepared for whatever comes next. That though includes politicians admitting making them and/or not listening ..

Those that did well (Taiwan, notably) followed their Pandemic Plan. Hopefully, the dunderheads in the US, especially, learn our lesson for the next one.

warts and all, still many orders of magnitude more useful than the US response to 9/11. There *will* be more viruses, more pandemics, so this is a useful fire drill to train for those. One example: masking is far, far more normalized than ever before.

Yes, but.. I was half-joking with a friend the other day. Part of the obstacle was that Western public health is anchored on the flu (not without reason but...) We didn't/couldn't pivot fast enough. So here's your potential tragedy: next, we get a flu, but try SARS/MERS response.

UK. Worked though the lockdowns in an office - minimal bubble crew, space for "safe distancing". When people come back, cases went up - new habits are hard to follow. Outdoors & fresh air, I wear a mask (love it), walk to work, but runners breathing on me really annoy me.

China contained it! I was there just before this broke, have family there in communication daily. 1) by taking it very seriously 2) we would call extreme measures of masks, social distance, testing testing testing 3) treatment and segregation of victims 4) cooperation
