As a science communicator who trains faculty to speak to the media, the thing that has frustrated me most over the last year is the insistence of some academics in saying "there is no evidence" instead of "we expect." ht @zeynep on pandemic comms misteps https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/02/how-public-health-messaging-backfired/618147/ …pic.twitter.com/Ob8zsvRfLs

As @zeynep explains, one reason academics choose to communicate like this is because publishing is based on the null hypothesis framework. But effective communicating with the public requires a different and more direct approach.pic.twitter.com/ebKRPyYsc0

In addition to traditional media, I think this confusion is (understandably) amplified by social media. Academics often use Twitter to communicate directly to each other, but the platform has an audience which includes the wider public and journalists.

One of the areas that we can and need to improve public health communications is around vaccines, and especially their role in reducing transmission. The vaccines we have really are incredible and will play a central role in ending this pandemic.https://twitter.com/luckytran/status/1359277656018157568 …

This has been a major science communication fail as most of the public now believe the vaccine will not help reduce transmission. Asking people to continue wearing masks doesn't mean we don't have confidence in the vaccines. It means we need to take all precautions in a crisis. https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/1359228515770654728 …

I do want to emphasize that overall, academics, public health officials, and journalists have done an amazing job communicating vital information to the wider pubic under often impossible conditions. I appreciate so much the vital work that everyone is doing!

In many ways, we are "building the plane while flying," because we are, well, navigating a historic crisis. So it's understandable that some things have been messy. Reflecting on these gives us a chance to course correct!

Thank you! Yeah, I understand where the habit comes from (as someone who reads/writes grants and pubs myself) but when "there is no evidence that" is used, it is not heard the way academics think they are saying (they take their own priors for granted) and... we get panic.

Exactly! Thanks so much for this piece (and all your work during this pandemic). I was nodding along for much of it, and I appreciate your suggestions for actionable communications steps as we enter the critical phase where we are so close, but the fatigue is huge.

Indeed! People are tired so it makes sense to direct energy to avoiding highest risk activities rather than flat messaging that conflates low and high-risk.
