This makes me question the idea that people are refusing the vaccine because of negative messaging. Seems like demographics plays a big rolehttps://twitter.com/dfreelon/status/1366393501563441153 …

Black vax hesitancy makes headlines, but the most reluctant group by far is white Republicans--a much larger group. https://www.axios.com/republicans-coronavirus-vaccine-hesitancy-023bf32f-3d68-4206-b906-4f701b87c39f.html … pic.twitter.com/ytKlpOSQv4

How is "demographics" and messaging presented as opposing each other? Do you think the large GOP refusal component has nothing to do with the immense misinformation (which is messaging!) on that side?

Recently @DKThomp had a good article on the many varieties, and of course, for each group, the messaging matters as well as their experiences to that moment and other factors, in different ways. "Demographics" isn't something that operates in a vacuum.https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/02/vaccine-hesitancy-isnt-just-one-thing/618164/ …

right. just about everybody i talked to—the conspiracy-theory researcher, the health care profs, and the clinicians—said that better messaging could help, and just about everybody i talked to said that better messaging wouldn't solve everything.

Of course. It's a year in and we are still having these frustrating either/or debates. Plus, as your article points out different groups have different reasons/dynamics. Multiple things matter *and* things that matter for one group don't necessarily matter a lot for another, etc.

Yeah. If one claims that X is the ONLY thing that matters, agree, that's almost never the case. But saying messaging matters? That's not discounting other factors, or saying it's the same for every group, or that it's the only thing that needs addressing. Not getting the debate.

CDC and US medical/public health professionals have known the hesitancy numbers for well over 9 months. The continued hubris of US medical professionals to believe people will trust the "science" has put us in this situation.

Led a presentation with head communications/public health officials in Durham during Zika. They had no idea how to perform a Behavior Change Intervention. It was like I was speaking a foreign language. A majority of US public health professionals do not know what they don't know.
