This makes me question the idea that people are refusing the vaccine because of negative messaging. Seems like demographics plays a big rolehttps://twitter.com/dfreelon/status/1366393501563441153 …

Recently @DKThomp had a good article on the many varieties, and of course, for each group, the messaging matters as well as their experiences to that moment and other factors, in different ways. "Demographics" isn't something that operates in a vacuum.https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/02/vaccine-hesitancy-isnt-just-one-thing/618164/ …
right. just about everybody i talked to—the conspiracy-theory researcher, the health care profs, and the clinicians—said that better messaging could help, and just about everybody i talked to said that better messaging wouldn't solve everything.
Even if the primary effect you're seeing here is that 51% of white Republicans don't trust a vaccine they perceive to be "Biden's", that's still messaging (eg. Trump not publicizing his vaccination until now)
I wonder that too. And I think it’s interesting that the white demo is broken down into subgroups while the other races are not. Would that make a difference w more info? Are white Republicans poorer rural? What would it look like if we look at just income data?
Then, same white Rs -- particularly upper class (i.e., not garden variety Chumpenproles) -- jump at the first opportunity to get THEIR shot. It's a charade, and one that like most things R, almost seems engineered to keep the a certain class alive at the expense of another...
my point is not that messaging plays no role. But I am increasingly seeing messaging as solely responsible for vaccine hesitancy
Two things though. I don't think you can keep demographics and messaging separate like that—i.e. it's not messaging, it's demographics. Those things are not separate, opposed dynamics. Solely? Of course not. Agree. But I don't see that claim, so would love to see the examples?
How much of that is social Darwinism? Is it messaging or something deeper, a survival of the fittest test, social proof to yr ppl that you’re Ubermensch? I’ll put money on its a status badge.
