“Mask use, temperature checks, and symptom screenings were required on entry; however, patrons were allowed to remove masks during exercise.” Pandemic theater. Temp checks at entry but maskless huffing and puffing indoors. Don’t blame the people, blame the rules that allow this.https://twitter.com/linseymarr/status/1364661446995542016 …

One of the big unanswered questions of the pandemic for me (which as far as I can tell we are not even probing) is how much of a difference could be made just by getting higher compliance with isolation-with-symptoms guidelines. 1/

For example, in a case like this, we should want to know things like: did people ignore their symptoms b/c they thought they were atypical of COVID? B/c they are symptoms they frequently experience anyways? etc. 2/

Each answer has a different implication for how one might try to address the issue. The rate at which people are failing to isolate while infectious and their reasons for doing so should also influence our assessment of the potential impact of things like rapid tests. 3/3

Here's the context for comment. Note that the report doesn't seem to break down how many people attended after symptoms or a positive a test, versus merely on the same day. Trying to carefully understand people's behavior seems important! 4/3pic.twitter.com/8DXH5Urdpq

So we know superspreading is a crucial driver—if you can chop it off, it's much easier to get the rest under control. And there are different types of places with superspreading: some where individualized compliance/rules will help and some less so (meatpacking plant/workplace).

The thing we got wrong was to flatten the importance of individual compliance and lose the distinction between high and low risk there, too, rather than focus on superspreading, wherever it could occur, imo.

Right. Separately, I also think there is behavioral data we should want that we're not looking for enough. If I was running a health department I would want to get people doing sociological research on the behavior and attitudes of people who get COVID symptoms or a +test. 1/

Surely a lot of "noncompliance" is tied to things like paid leave, but there's may be more to it that could inform policy decisions as well. What is the psychology of someone who has just noticed they have a sore throat on a day they were planning on going to the gym? 2/
