I feel like this “blink” happens to me individually. My post-knowledge self has trouble imagining what it was like to be my pre-knowledge self. I can remember past events, but I remember and make sense of them necessarily through hindsight.

If I try really hard, I can get closer to what we might call empathy with my prior self. But the exercise feels similar to aiming for true empathy with someone else: not fully possible.
