Cognitive biases, moral panics, authoritarian impulses, victim-blaming, groupthink, traditional & social media distortions, ignoring everything we know about human behavior & sometimes even viruses, philosophical frequentism, terrible risk-assessment...https://twitter.com/virginiahume/status/1363507633840349185 …

That makes sense! I could see the chanting being a reason but assumed there was also a significant indoor component, like the people pointing to the Rose Garden event for Amy Coney Barrett who ignored the indoor component of the event.

Completely agree w/you & very much appreciate all of your thoughts/positions on the epidemic. The only counter I can think of w/r/t significant outdoor gatherings is that are almost always matched w/large indoor activities as well. Sturgis & Mardi Gras being 2 prominent examples

Right. That's the challenge. But there are a large number of outdoor-only activities, too and have been for the past year. We should have more than a few examples, at least, at this point.

That’s the point. People don’t assemble in mass outside and then quickly leave. It sets a bad example, encourages gatherings that do cause spread & likely does cause spread itself or at best we don’t know (particularly with the new variants in the US). People just need to wait.
