Of course, this changes everything. The people with endless second chances don't have to be so defensive. They can experiment, screw up, do something terrible etc. Meanwhile, those who know that once they're down, they're going to be kicked... Very few good options there.

You brilliantly articulate something that has been bugging me for quite some time. I was staring at that very pattern but was not seeing it for what it is, a small gang collectively protecting their own a.... and not surprisingly a gang sociologically very "narrow".
