It's been a year and we've had hundreds of millions of cases and yet, we have basically almost no documented transmission outdoors outside of a very few cases with prolonged and sustained contact. Impossible, no. A worry? Not really.https://twitter.com/gedawei/status/1362051776896114690 …

Throughout the various lockdowns in California, outdoor exercise has been considered an “essential activity.” The problem came when people “socialized” outdoors. Does @Zeynep think playing basketball with 9 friends at an outdoor park is safe during rapid spread of the disease?

Seriously! I don't think there is any evidence to support these intervention approaches—and believe strongly that we should be facilitating every single outdoor activity possible for students these days. If we don’t, they will socialize anyways--indoors.https://twitter.com/sdbaral/status/1348982052775989248 …

Outdoors during #COVID19 We should: - Subsidize costs of outdoor activities as fun outlets for kids and adults - Set up activities at large parks across cities on set schedule and make messaging fun We should not: - Shut down outdoor activities - Focus on outdoor mask mandates

what's your take on large, hi-contact outdoor festivals like Mardi Gras though? Seems like those had an impact

People at Mardi Gras frequently spend hours indoor-bar-hopping on top of the outdoor parades

anecdote: we played tennis a few weeks ago with a buddy who would have been at peak infectiousness (tennis Sunday; his symptoms began Tuesday) Wife and I just bumped elbows with him, no hugs, all outdoors, with 4-5ft distance during water breaks. And we never tested positive!

contrast that w/ my friend’s experience with his family — all infected, 5+ individuals, thru sustained indoor contact! Maybe we got lucky, but I doubt it. 70f+ sun, breezy, outdoors. It’s just not a recipe for viral transmission! I prolly inhaled some viral particles tho 😂

But almost all youth sports (schools closed as well) still banned in California

In many states, middle and high school students have been playing basketball indoors against other teams, with fans in the stands, without issues for an entire season. An outdoor pickup game with friends seems incredibly low risk.

Outdoor activities such as fishing/boating, surfing/beach, golf, and cycling have been like medicine this past year to my young adult sons+their friends = they get respite from screens, keep engaged with friends+ stay physically active w less risk than bars or indoor parties.
