I would not be surprised at all if hybrid school was the worst possible combination by creating bridges between otherwise separate networks – which is exactly what you wanna avoid in a pandemic.https://twitter.com/katetaylornyt/status/1361737768892776452 …

Yeah. If schools can open, they should open. Halfway or unnecessary measures don't help, and can make transmission challenges *worse*.https://twitter.com/jessica_bassett/status/1361818477754015749 …

But... one of the reasons that schools that are offering hybrid (at least in NYC) are doing a halfway version is because they can't bring all the students back fulltime and keep the social distancing measures they've been told to adhere to.

Under current arrangements, the more kids who want to attend class in person, the less capacity each school has to provide in-person class. It's crazy-making but there is a basic logic to it.

I also do wonder if the social distancing in place (and, more controversially, the demography of who wants to attend school in NYC right now - weighted toward richer white families) contributes to the low transmission rates in schools.

Right, but not clear the current distancing measures make that much sense, to be honest for schools given other country's experience, and it's plausible the downsides of hybrid (network-mixing & less school for the kids) would outweigh whatever the plausible distancing benefit.

Yeah I'm not arguing that the social distancing measures in schools are good or necessary - I really don't know (I do know my child *hates* them because it makes school feel more like detention). I am reasonably confident that changing them now would be a whole other shitstorm.

We've been telling everyone that social distancing is one of the key pillars of pandemic defense for nearly a year. I don't think it can be walked back now without major blowback from teachers, parents, staff.

Right. I get it. But in reality, hybrid is probably making transmission risks higher. See below example. Keep hearing versions of that. Better masks (especially for teachers) & ventilation are probably better mitigation strategies but we are where we are. https://twitter.com/LaurenW63864031/status/1361821488572215302 …

Otoh I keep hearing that nyc is going to change its shutdown rules wrt to testing - currently schools are shut for 10 days if there are two unconnected cases, which makes it nearly impossible to keep schools open for any length. So if - big if -they can change that....

Eliza ShapiroVerified account @elizashapiroIf you told me in August that NYC would hold months of in-person learning without major virus outbreaks while other cities barely had a plan to go back, I wouldn't have believed you.
