I would not be surprised at all if hybrid school was the worst possible combination by creating bridges between otherwise separate networks – which is exactly what you wanna avoid in a pandemic.https://twitter.com/katetaylornyt/status/1361737768892776452 …

But... one of the reasons that schools that are offering hybrid (at least in NYC) are doing a halfway version is because they can't bring all the students back fulltime and keep the social distancing measures they've been told to adhere to.
-
Under current arrangements, the more kids who want to attend class in person, the less capacity each school has to provide in-person class. It's crazy-making but there is a basic logic to it.

I love your work but I think you may be off on this one. If the time is limited due to cohorts for spacing then it would make sense to have a hybrid option.

Not sure I agree with this - but anecdotally one thing I’ve noticed in my community is that if schools open, parents assume that everything is possible: sleepovers, birthday parties at Chuck E Cheese, sports, dances, dating etc. and I don’t see any messaging counteracting that.
-
And, I mean - I get it- how do you tell your teen that school is safe but their boyfriend can’t come over to hang and Netflix and Chill- or that Johnny’s birthday party is too dangerous but they have to go to school still. It’s confusing.

Are you of the opinion that distancing in schools isn't important? I think that's the impetus for many hybrid models.
-
Agreed — there’s some amount of safety theater reducing in-person instructional time in some districts, but the broader issue is to ensure distancing in classrooms, cohorts need to rotate — unless there are community-wide efforts to secure more learning space.

How do we square this with the fact that "distance between students" is seen by many epidemiologists as second only to masking in importance? This article says they don't recommend hybrid school, but distancing is the reason for hybridhttps://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/11/upshot/schools-reopening-coronavirus-experts.html …

I suppose if staff were vaccinated and the attendance groups were not overlapping then sufficient restraint on suppression might be maintained.

Do schools have enough ventilation? If not, 6 ft distance doesn’t prevent transmissions. A lot of studies have already demonstrated this issue. Ventilation is critical in indoor settings! A recent incident report:https://news.yahoo.com/infected-5-minutes-20-feet-192346911.html …

yeah why not do ventilation in this cold frigid winter.
