It’s astounding that human challenge trials or some sort of fast-tracking FDA approvals were never part of the discussion. 500,000 people have died and we had the vaccine in January 2020.

Of course there are many *reasons* it might not have worked out well. But is our best all-things-considered judgment really that HCTs are *expected* to be negative, when the alternative is that hundreds/thousands die every day that research/approvals are delayed?
